How Do You Start, Run and Achieve a Successful Life?

“Know yourself. Find an objective way to get to know who you are, what you’re capable of, what you want, what you don’t want. Get a sense of your strengths and your weaknesses.”

The Question

How do you start, run and achieve a successful life?

I laughed a little when I first saw this question as the scope of it is so big.

Yet the more I thought about it, I was able to come up with some good advice on how to approach life so when you look back as a Great Grandma or Grandpa you’ll feel satisfied with how you lived.

Here’s My Advice

The first thing is to know yourself. Find an objective way to get to know who you are, what you’re capable of, what you want, what you don’t want. Get a sense of your strengths and your weaknesses.

I’m big on personality testing. It is appealing to me as a reflection tool to learn more about myself and figure out where I have weaknesses, where I have strengths and maybe help map out the kind of life I’m most likely to be successful in.

Next is to get clear on what you really want – not what your friends want or society tells you to want. What is really most important to you?

The truth is that what we want in our life should help decide what you do for work. But ultimately, for most of us, what we do to earn money plays a big role in our lives – both in terms of how we spend our time and also what is possible for us in terms of travel, what we can buy and where we can liv.

Figure out what that is that you want to do and then pursue it with all your heart. Go after that and keep going despite the obstacles you get.

Every so often, step back and get an objective perspective on how you’re doing and what you’re capable of because some of us can be a little naive as for what is possible.

I’m not saying to cut your dreams off at the knees and forget about trying to accomplish something big but it does help to actually get a sense of what you’re doing well and what you’re struggling with.

Taking that objective look at yourself can help you reshape your plan to get to your dream so that it’s a better fit for who you are.

Whatever it is you’re doing, leverage your strengths. This is big. Find a way to focus on the things that you do really well and make that your primary contribution to either your job or your business.

If you can find a way to always work in your strengths, you’re going to be happier and more fulfilled, and of course, you’re going to get a lot better results.
